The Power of Praying For Your Child’s Future Spouse
As parents, we pray for our children’s health, safety, development, and maybe even an upcoming school exam. But, many parents don’t consider praying over one of the most important parts of their child’s life — their future spouse. Ultimately, one of the biggest decisions they will make is who they choose as their spouse — it will impact the rest of their life.
A strong, godly marriage is something we all strive for, but we know it’s not always easy. So, we have the amazing opportunity to pray ahead of our children’s marriages, hoping to lay a faith foundation that will carry them through many trials.
There is truly power in praying for your child’s future spouse, and it’s a privilege that carries with it some amazing blessings. In this blog, we highlight 3 specific things to pray over for your kids’ future spouses, and some prayer examples to help get you started.
#1: Pray for their Relationship with Jesus
“Jesus is the way, the truth & the life.” – John 14:6
Pray that they will have a hunger and a thirst for righteousness, that the right people come into their life to guide them toward Jesus, and that their hearts will be ready to receive the Word.
Father, may my child’s future spouse — whoever and wherever they are — be blessed by Your Word. I pray that they seek You and strive to follow You in all that they do. Put people in their life who will share the Gospel with them and encourage them along their faith journey as they grow into the man (or woman) you created them to be.
#2: Pray for Protection on their Faith Journey
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,”
– Romans 12:2
Pray that they will be protected from the lies of the enemy and that they will stay close to Christ even when the world tries to pull them in other directions. Read Psalm 91 and pray it aloud regularly, and you’ll notice it covers an entire 24-hour day for protection in the physical and spiritual realm.
Father, I pray that you bless them and keep them physically safe. Guard their hearts and minds, and help them learn how to rely on You in times of trouble and temptation.
#3: Pray for Wisdom & Discernment
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” – Proverbs 9:10
Pray for wisdom and discernment as they grow into godly men and women. These are values that make the best spouses!
Father, I pray that they would have the ability to perceive and judge things clearly in their life, especially those that are not obvious. I pray that they use wisdom, gleaned from You, in decisions that will greatly impact their life.
Just imagine the power in praying these things over your child’s future spouse, before you or they even meet them! You’re inviting the Holy Spirit to work in their lives and lay the foundation for a godly marriage with your child. What a beautiful gift.
There is another hidden blessing in this powerful gift. By praying over your children and their future spouses, you are investing in your future grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. You are truly investing, spiritually, in generations to come. There is no better gift than that.
